One Heart Care Diagnostic and Cardiac Centre

Mississauga, Ontario. In Progress.

An extensive cardiology center, the One Heart Care Diagnostic and Cardiac Centre offers various cardiologists a place to work together, providing healthcare for the Mississauga and its surrounding area. The clinic helps diagnose and monitor the health status of patients who have heart disease and related issues.

The most important factor to consider was the well-being of the patients visiting. The pressure and stress caused by the illness can be reduced by a good, efficient layout and a soothing environment. We carefully studied the existing building and the specifics of the practice; we also held several meeting workshops with the practicing doctors and staff to study the existing clinics and develop a more efficient practice that could be fostered with the new design.

The design aimed to shorten the average wait time for cardiac patient acceptance down to 3 months or less. In order to achieve this goal, the efficiency and flow were extremely important. We needed to ensure that not only the health services were delivered as efficiently as possible but also with a great deal of care and attention.

In order to create an efficient flow of the large scale clinic, we broke down the layout into five pods, three for examination and consulting, one for nuclear and one for administration and staff. We connect the pods with a very clear and easy to understand navigational system.

Each pod is identified by a specific colour and each individual examination room is designed ergonomically to fit the patient, doctors and all equipment comfortably. Moreover, many of the cardiologists involved in the project are the top researchers in Canada; and therefore there is dedicated space for research and exchange of ideas.

Aside from the clinical requirements of the programming, we recognized the emotional needs of the users. At times, certain patients may have have to return for regular visits. Being cautious about the sensitivity of the patients, family members and doctors, we created a warm and inviting setting, with a sense of comfort and confidence. The materials we used are luxurious but also inviting, professional, and durable, such as marble, walnut wood, high density porcelain, brushed brass, with a contrast of more richly coloured fabric.
